What is SYLGARD 170 used for?
It is a two-part, fast-cure silicone encapsulant used as a protective coating for electrical assemblies such as power supplies, transformers, sensors, amplifiers, and connectors, as well as for applications like battery encapsulation. It provides good flow, moderate thermal conductivity, low viscosity, and flame resistance.
How fast does SYLGARD 170 cure?
It is designed as a fast-cure elastomer that cures at room temperature, and it can be heat-accelerated for even faster processing. Actual cure speed varies with temperature and humidity. This quick-cure formulation improves throughput on production lines compared with slower-curing encapsulants.
How is it mixed?
SYLGARD 170 uses a simple 1:1 mix ratio of its two components. Cure begins as soon as the parts are mixed, progressing through a rise in viscosity and gelation to a solid elastomer. Note the mixer is not shipped with this kit, so plan for mixing equipment separately.
Is SYLGARD 170 flame resistant?
Yes. Dow describes it as a general-purpose encapsulant with flame resistance, which helps protect potted assemblies against ignition risk. Combined with its moderate thermal conductivity, this supports its use in electronics that must manage heat and meet safety expectations, though users should confirm any required formal ratings.
Why is it black?
SYLGARD 170 is black, which suits applications where an opaque encapsulant is preferred, such as shielding light-sensitive components or achieving a uniform dark finish. Both parts are required to cure the material, and thorough mixing before potting gives consistent, reliable results.
