What is DOWSIL Q1-4010 used for?
It is a one-part silicone conformal coating applied in thin layers to printed wiring boards, sensitive components, and flexible or rigid circuit boards. It provides environmental and mechanical protection that helps extend component life, and its UV indicators let inspectors verify coverage under ultraviolet light after application.
Why does the coating contain UV indicators?
UV indicators make the otherwise clear coating fluoresce under ultraviolet light, so operators and automated optical inspection systems can confirm that every intended area is coated and spot any gaps or misses. This supports quality control on populated boards where a transparent coating would otherwise be hard to see.
Is Q1-4010 solvent-free?
Yes. Dow describes it as a solvent-free, no-solvent-added elastomer, which avoids the emissions and handling concerns associated with solvent-borne coatings. It is a stress-relieving, medium-viscosity coating, and because it adds no solvent, there is no solvent flash-off step required before the heat cure develops the film.
How is it cured?
Q1-4010 is heat-cured, with cure controlled by temperature. Time to cure depends on film thickness, oven type, and how densely the board is populated; large, heavy, or crowded boards take longer because their greater thermal mass needs extra time to reach the target temperature. Does the coating meet industry standards?
Dow states Q1-4010 is UL, IPC, and MIL recognized, making it suitable for applications that call for those recognitions.
