What is DOWSIL 732 used for?
It is a one-part, general-purpose silicone adhesive/sealant for industrial bonding and sealing, and it can serve as a formed-in-place gasket material. It cures to a tough, flexible rubber with good adhesion to many substrates and excellent dielectric properties, making it versatile across many assembly applications.
How does DOWSIL 732 cure?
It cures at room temperature when exposed to moisture in the air using an acetoxy system. The surface skins over upon exposure, becoming tack-free in under 45 minutes, and the cure then continues inward, reaching about 3 mm depth in 24 hours at 50% relative humidity. Deep sections cure more slowly.
Does 732 release anything during cure?
Yes. As an acetoxy-cure silicone, 732 releases a small amount of acetic acid (a vinegar-like smell) as it cures. This can corrode some metals, especially in direct contact or fully enclosed cures. Consider a neutral-cure product for sensitive metals, and always follow the Safety Data Sheet.
What standards does 732 meet?
Dow states that DOWSIL 732 complies with MIL-A-46106 and FDA 177.2600, which cover rubber articles intended for repeated use. Because compliance details can depend on grade and application, users who need formal qualification should confirm the current status of their specific product and intended use before relying on it.
What temperatures can it withstand?
The clear grade is stable and flexible from -60°C to +180°C, with short peaks up to +205°C. That broad range suits many industrial sealing and bonding tasks.
