Differences Between Microporous and SMS Cleanroom Frocks

Frocks for cleanroom and medical environments provide protection against splashes and other forms of contamination. They are made out of various materials including microporous, Tyvek, SMS, and polypropylene. Each of these materials has its own unique properties offering different levels of protection.

What Is A Microporous Cleanroom Frock?

Microporous is one type of material that is used for disposable garments in the cleanroom. This material is created by taking a polyethylene film and thermally laminating it onto a polypropylene nonwoven material. The blend of polyethylene and polypropylene is used to create a unique breathable membrane.

Microporous fabric is widely used in cleanrooms and various critical environments. It is also suitable for exposure to some hazardous liquids and where liquid splash is a concern. The finished fabric also contains anti-static properties from a proprietary additive.

Tyvek is another type of material that is used for disposable garments in the cleanroom. Tyvek garments are produced by shredding and processing polyethylene fibers to create a synthetic paper.

Benefits of Microporous Cleanroom Frock

There are several benefits of microporous frocks when compared to Tyvek garments.

  • The inherent construction of the microporous cleanroom frock allows the material to breathe so it is cooler to wear.
  • Microporous cleanroom frocks are widely used in cleanrooms and various critical environments.
  • Microporous cleanroom frocks reduce the risk of bare skin being exposed when a worker is reaching.
  • Microporous cleanroom frocks are suitable for exposure to some hazardous liquids and where liquid splash is a concern.
  • The fabric in microporous cleanroom frocks contain anti-static properties from a proprietary additive.
  • Microporous cleanroom frocks are suitable in most class 10,000 operations.

A microporous cleanroom frock is a great alternative to a Tyvek garment.

Differences of Environstar® MP Over Tyvek Garments

There are several differences of Environstar® MP over Tyvek garments.

  • Environstar® MP is a lower cost alternative to Tyvek garments.
  • Environstar® MP has a more substantial snap than Tyvek so workers are able to wear the garment more times without the snaps failing.
  • The Environstar® MP sleeves are one to two inches longer than DuPont’s Tyvek and creates more of an overlap with a glove.

Some of our microporous cleanroom frocks include the Tians High Performance Static Dissipative Frock and the Tians Smock, MP Coated.

What Is A SMS Cleanroom Frock?

SMS stands for spun bond/melt blown/spun bond. Just as its name suggests, this nonwoven fabric is a combination of meltblown and spun bond fabrics. Because of this combination of fabrics, SMS is great at repelling water.

Spunbond polypropylene is very durable and strong. It doesn’t fray or absorb any water. Meltblown is webbed, softer, and more pliable. This combination of material excels in industries where workers need protection from fluids or wet substances.

SMS is designed for controlled environments where fibers and particulate contamination is a concern such as food processing, fiberglass handling, paint spraying, lab/biohazards, pesticide spraying, medical, cleanroom, metal surface treating, general cleaning, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Benefits of SMS Cleanroom Frock

  • SMS is one of the most breathable long-length lab coats.
  • SMS is low in particulate, and are antistatic to protect sensitive products.
  • SMS is non-sterile.
  • SMS is tear and puncture resistant.
  • SMS has a cloth-like feel making it a very comfortable fabric to wear.
  • SMS is anti-static.
  • SMS is ISO 6 Class 1000 compatible.
  • SMS offers liquid splash and dry particle protection.
  • SMS is breathable which prevents it from being so hot to wear.
  • SMS keeps workers cool while providing both filtration and liquid protection.
